Your Next Move: Reflection Toolkit
Time to think. Skills to practise.
When a young person is removed from a lesson, placed in internal isolation, suspended or simply needs time away following a difficult moment, what happens next matters.
Your Next Move helps schools turn reflection time into something more useful.
Created for pupils aged 11–16, this practical, strengths-based toolkit provides a collection of short, accessible activities that can be used largely independently, with initial guidance and appropriate adult support. Rather than beginning with “What did you do wrong?”, it encourages young people to become curious about what happened, what was going on for them and what might help next.
Across the toolkit, pupils explore their strengths and identity; emotions and early signals; thoughts, interpretations and assumptions; listening and reacting; regulation and reset strategies; consequences and influence; alternative responses; and future goals, support and agency.
The activities are modular, not sequential. Staff can choose the activity most relevant to the pupil and situation, or young people can return to different activities over time. This makes the toolkit flexible enough to support a single difficult moment, repeated reflection or a longer period of support.
Crucially, Your Next Move is not a punishment workbook, behaviour contract or exercise in forced compliance. It does not assume the young person was entirely wrong, that everyone else was entirely right, or that difficult emotions simply need to disappear.
Instead, it uses reflection to build something pupils can take with them: greater awareness, practical psychological skills, more options and greater agency.
Because one difficult moment does not define a young person.
The situation might not be their choice. Their next move sometimes is.
Regulate • Recover • Adapt. This is psychological fitness.

YOUR NEXT MOVE: REFLECTION TOOLKIT: Start Where You Are
INTRODUCTION — START WHERE YOU ARE A different kind of reflection. Young people are introduced to psychological fitness and how to use the toolkit. They can choose what feels most useful rather than having to work through every activity in order. REGULATE • RECOVER • ADAPT

Your Next Move Reflection Toolkit: Start With You
START WITH YOU See the person beyond the moment. Activities help young people recognise their strengths, qualities and capabilities — including how strengths can help, disappear under pressure or sometimes be overused. Identity • Strengths • Self-awareness

Your Next Move Reflection Toolkit: Understand The Moment
Get curious about what happened. Explore emotions, early signals, thoughts, assumptions and reactions. Pupils learn to separate what happened from the story their brain added, check what they know and notice what they might have missed. Emotions • Thoughts • Assumptions • Listening

Your Next Move Reflection Toolkit: Build Your Toolkit
Find what actually helps. Young people try practical ways to regulate, create space and reset. There is no single technique that works for everyone — the aim is to discover useful strategies they can draw on when they need them. Regulation • Reset • Practice • Support

Your Next Move Reflection Toolkit: Look Beyond The Moment
See more than one possible road. Activities explore consequences, influence and turning points, while helping pupils distinguish what they can change from what they cannot. They practise finding alternative responses without pretending that every situation is easy or fair. Influence • Choices • Possibilities • Adaptability

Your Next Move Reflection Toolkit: Your Next Move
Turn reflection towards what comes next. Young people reconnect with what matters to them and look ahead to goals, relationships and the future. They identify realistic next steps, possible pathways and the people or support that can help. Goals • Hope • Pathways • Agency
About the organisation
Bounce Forward
Bounce Forward is the UK’s psychological-fitness charity.
We help children and young people — and the adults and environments around them — develop the understanding, skills and shared language to regulate, recover and adapt through challenge, change and everyday life.
Our work brings together mental resilience and emotional wellbeing, shifting the focus upstream: building capability before crisis, rather than waiting for something to go wrong. We translate evidence from psychology, resilience research, cognitive behavioural approaches and positive psychology into practical learning that can be taught, modelled and used in real life.
From evidence-informed curricula and staff development to family support and whole-community approaches, our work recognises that young people do not develop in isolation. What happens around a young person shapes what becomes possible within them.
Everything we create is practical, grounded in evidence and designed to build something that lasts — psychologically fit people and communities, better prepared to meet life.
